Katie always had a smile and a special cuddle for everyone she knew and at times people she didn't. She had a great sense of humour and a unique outlook on life. She had a lot to cope with in her short life but always faced things in a positive and optimistic way. Kate was given 12 months to live back in November last year unless she had a liver transplant. She had never realised or wanted to know how serious her condition was and the news came as a huge shock. Kate being Kate dealt with the situation in a way that only Kate could do, dusted herself off and got on with things. Kate had a little boy 'Jake' who was then only 3 and she made provisions to make his future secure by deciding what would happen to him if things went against her. He was always her priority and through her illness although at times she struggled she made sure he was happy and settled. Kate got the call she thought would never come on 24th June 2009 and was excited and confident that this was her chance at a future. Although she must have been scared she showed no signs and on the way to St James in Leeds she talked and laughed and was almost relieved. We spent all night talking and doing puzzle books waiting to find out if the transplant would go ahead. We got the news that all was ok and that the transplant would take place at 10.00 a.m.25th June. The first transplant was unsucessful due to huge complications and Kate was taken to the Intensive care unit whilst she was put on the urgent transplant list for another donor. We got a call on Saturday evening to say they had found another donor and another transplant would be carried out on the Sunday morning (28th June). This transplant went well and she spent the next 7 weeks in the intensive care unit but due to complications she lost her fight for life and died on 12th August 2009. She had all her family around her and had not spent even one minute on her own. From the minute she arrived at St James' there was always someone with her.
